6 Day Camino Experience

6 Day Camino Experience that retrace the footsteps of those who have gone before. Walking these trails with Phil and Elaine will leave imprints that will last a lifetime.

Every day, you can expect something totally different to what has gone before; a mountain trail one day, an old coastal pilgrim path another, a cliff walk, even a cycle on the Waterford Greenway or a walk around the mystical lakes at Glendalough.

  • Comeragh Mountains: One of Ireland’s best kept secrets, the Comeraghs offer everything from a dramatic waterfall to an age-old pathway that follows the River Mahon through a cathedral of rock to the woods below.
  • St. Declan’s Way: Walk in the footsteps of St. Declan setting out on stunning cliff walk around Ardmore and later arriving in timeless surrounds of Lismore, taking in signature points on Ireland’s original Camino along the way.
  • Waterford Greenway: A journey through time by foot or bicycle on this old railway line against the towering backdrop of the Comeragh Mountains on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.
  • To the waters and the wild: Coastal tour through the Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark with a beach walk in Tramore followed by a cliff walk and boat trip in the fishing village of Dunmore East.
  • Glendalough – the journey home: Guided walk through the mystical surrounds of this ‘valley of the two lakes’ to soak in the peace and beauty that first captivated St. Kevin some 1,500 years ago.

Our base for the 6 days is The Tower Hotel and Leisure Centre, in the heart of Ireland’s oldest City, Waterford. This Neville Hotel, offers the City’s most central location and overlooks the River Suir. With Reginald’s Tower on your doorstep and in the middle of the vibrant, award winning Viking Triangle, this setting offers a little something for everyone. All you have to do is show up. You simply leave the rest to us!

We then take in some of the iconic stretches of the old pilgrim path St. Declan set out on some 1,500 years ago, as we follow the steps of those who have gone before (5 to 15km, the choice is yours).

Afternoon: We visit the beautiful heritage town of Lismore. Founded by St. Carthage and his community of monks in 636 AD, Lismore gained its most famous feature, its castle, in 1185 when Prince John built a fortress on the banks of the River Blackwater. Here, by the banks of the River Blackwater, we come face to face with these stunning remnants of a bygone time.

Afternoon: We have the option of walking or cycling the last stretch of the Waterford Greenway from Durrow into Dungarvan (10km). If you’re up to it, the experience of gently cycling through Durrow Tunnel and on through the panoramic vistas that await on the other side is as liberating as it gets.

As we walk along the lakeside, we sense we have entered a sacred space. One of the team from Tearmann Spirituality, a local retreat centre seeped in the history and the spirituality of Glendalough, will lead us on our walk around the lakes. (This is our final day. 3 Day Gentle Camino

Waterford Camino Tours invites you on a journey through the spellbinding beauty of this relatively undiscovered corner of Ireland’s Ancient East. The trails will lead you to places of real beauty along paths that our ancestors have trod for centuries. Reflective walks, stillness and good company… 3 simple ingredients on our Camino.

We tailor our Camino each day to suit everyone. Not too long or too short – a distance that’s right for you! Take the first step. Join us on our 3 Day Gentle Camino and you will experience something that will live long in the memory.

Day 1: WELCOME TO IRELAND’S OLDEST CITY – WATERFORD

Arrive at The Tower Hotel for 2pm before guided tour of the Viking Triangle. This will be followed by a welcoming reception of wine, story and song in the 13th Century Choristers’ Hall, Waterford Treasures Museum.

It was from here that Mayor James Rice set out on his 2 epic voyages to do the Camino de Santiago in Spain in the 1400s. The Wine Vault, next to the Choristers’ Hall, dates back to this time and is living testimony to Waterford’s historic association with the Camino.

Day 2: FROM THE GREENWAY TO THE FALLS

Morning: Short trails on the Waterford Greenway. The Greenway follows the route of the old railway line from Waterford to Dungarvan and our highlights tour includes a little early morning meditation alongside the River Suir as it leaves the city, a walk across the viaduct in Kilmacthomas, a stroll through Durrow Tunnel and on to the stunning panorama at Clonea. The Waterford Greenway is good for mind, body and soul.

Mahon, Falls, Greenway, Waterford, Comeragh, Walking, Gentle, Camino, Guided, Tour

Afternoon: A visit to Mahon Falls in the heart of the Comeragh Mountains. Nature bares its soul as you take the 1km trail out to the Falls. There’s a subliminal symmetry to it all – sheep, mountains, rocky hillsides… and the water cascades downwards to the awaiting ocean as it has done for millions of years. It’s great to take a seat on a rock and soak your feet in the streams below and take time to absorb the wonder of it all. The universe has a way of tuning us to a new frequency. By the end of this trail, we sense we are part of something greater than ourselves.

Day 3: TO THE WATERS AND THE WILD

Morning: Tramore is a particular highlight on our Camino. This seaside resort is renowned for its long beach walks, popular cafes and the many surfing schools that have sprung up here in recent years. The 1km walk from the Doneraile, overlooking the Bay, down onto the prom is a must. Nothing nicer than an ice-cream by the beach and a visit to the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens to complete the experience.

Gardens, Japanese, Camino, Gentle, Guided, Tour, Waterford, Ireland, Walk

Afternoon: We then take a 20-minute coach transfer to the fishing village of Dunmore East. The Dunmore East Harbour Walk is beautiful as it brings us face to face with the curious history of this picturesque village hidden in this tranquil corner of Ireland’s South East. You have the choice of a cuppa by the harbour or a 2km stroll across the headland on the magical Dunmore East Cliff Walk. We complete our day with a memorable boat trip out to the Bay with Brendan on the ‘Keltoi Warrior’ to check in on the lobster pots and anchor in some quiet place to soak in the wonder of it all with a cuppa in hand. Moments like this are meant to be savoured.

On arrival in this seaside town, we have a choice of an 8km walk around the sand dunes on the beach or a beautiful cliff walk along the path from Newtown Cove. Ice-cream on the promenade completes the experience!

‘To the waters and the wild’ will take you to the fishing village of Dunmore East for a 4 km cliff walk followed by a boat trip out in the bay. Brendan takes us on a voyage of discovery, sharing anecdotes on the coves and sea caves, and simply reminding us unknowingly of what really matters in life.

1 and 2 Day Camino Experiences

Due to the COVID19 travel restrictions we have rescheduled many of our events to the Autumn. Please send Dr. Phil and Elaine an email to; info@waterfordcamino.com if you have anything you would like to discuss regarding booking an event with us. Thank you. Stay safe.

‘From the Greenway to the Falls’ is a unique ‘time-out’ that leads you off the beaten track to discover some of the wonders of this hidden corner of Ireland. As we make our way along the Waterford Greenway and on to the Mahon Falls in the heart of the Comeragh Mountains, we take time to soak in the breathtaking beauty we pass along the way.
